VIVO Y66 features

Vivo is one of those companies whose smartphones focus heavily on the selfie-related hardware and software features. The Chinese smartphone maker launched the V5 last year, following it up with the launch of the dual-selfie camera powered V5 Plus. And it's back with yet another smartphone .

The company's newest handset - Y66, is priced at Rs 14,990. While it shares quite a few features with the earlier-launched V5, there are some new offerings too.

We spent a few days with the Vivo Y66 to see whether it's a good buy, and here's our full review.

Design

The look and feel of Vivo Y66 is very similar to the Vivo V5. The design looks elegant, but we would have liked to see something different.

Having a White and Crown Gold colour, the Y66's front panel is dominated by a 5.5-inch HD display of 720x1280 pixel resolution, complete with 2.5D curved glass design.

The earpiece and selfie camera are placed above the display, while the capacitive navigation keys are below it.

Beneath the non-removable back panel of the Vivo Y66 is a 3,000mAh battery. There's a 13MP rear camera (with LED flash) at the top left corner, while the Vivo branding is at the centre.

The right edge of the smartphone has the volume rocker and power button, while the bottom edge has the 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB charging port and speaker grille.

Overall, we liked the design of the Y66, even if it's a little repetitive.

Moving on to the display, we found it to be good. The colours are bright and vibrant, and image reproduction is clear. However, the display is reflective and sunlight readability isn't very good. Viewing angles could have been better too.

It's worth noting that the Y66 retains a feature from the V5 - the eye protection mode that filters out Blue light from the display to reduce strain.

Performance

Vivo Y66 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM. There's also 32GB of internal storage, with support for microSD cards of up to 256GB in size.

The smartphone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, skinned with the company's FunTouch OS 3.0. Having all standard connectivity options like 4G VoLTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, the Vivo Y66 is powered by a 3,000mAh battery.

The Y66 has all the standard software tweaks that we've seen in previous Vivo smartphones. There's no app drawer and all apps are placed on multiple homescreens. Quick settings are not integrated with the notification panel, and can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the display. In essence, FunTouch OS is heavily inspired from Apple's iOS.

Another feature that the Y66 has is 'Smart Screen Split'. It's similar to Android Nougat's split-view multitasking functionality and allows users to run two apps at the same time. We found it to be a nifty addition, especially since the smartphone comes with older Marshmallow OS.

During our testing, we saw no lags in the device. Launching multiple apps and switching between them is easy. Multi-tabbed browsing with Google Chrome works well too.

Another plus point that we'd like to mention is that we didn't face any heating issue with the Y66 - something that we see in a lot of budget smartphones. Even when we used Maps for navigation for more than an hour, the device did not heat up.

Call quality on the Vivo Y66 was good and remained clear, even in areas of weak reception.

Since Vivo focuses heavily on the camera-related features of its smartphones, we were eager to test out the Y66's cameras. The smartphone's 13MP rear camera takes good images in well-lit areas but the quality does go down in case of pictures taken in dark.

The 16MP selfie shooter is a lot like Vivo V5's, except for the lower resolution. The camera app comes with several beautification features that can be used to do anything from adjusting skin tone to slimming the face.

Vivo Y66 comes with the company's well-known 'Moonlight Glow' feature, which helps in taking selfies in dimly-lit areas. It automatically triggers in low-light conditions. While LED flash tends to make pictures taken in dark conditions look unnaturally white, Moonlight Glow is softer. It brightens the face of the subject by adding a natural glow.

But even then the camera quality of the Vivo Y66 was good, it didn't match up to the V5. Then again, both of these smartphones fall in different price segments, so it's not exactly a fair comparison.

We played YouTube videos on the smartphone and the Y66 handled these well, both on Wi-Fi and mobile data. Audio quality is good as well.

Coming to the 3,000mAh battery of the Y66, it lasted us an entire day with moderate usage. It involved using social media, listening to music, watching videos and of course, taking phone calls.

We also ran benchmarking tests on the device. In the Geekbench 4 test, the smartphone scored 478 in single core performance and 1958 in multi-core performance. In Antutu benchmarks, the Y66 scored 33424.

Verdict

We'd say we liked the Vivo Y66. But at a price of Rs 14,990, we were expecting more features. Smartphones that are priced much lesser than the Y66 offer more features such as fingerprint sensors and Full HD displays. So unless you're too fond of clicking selfies, we'd suggest considering alternatives such as Coolpad Note 5.
